About This Magazine

Founded by a gang of school activists in 1966, and originally called This Magazine is About Schools, This Magazine is one of Canada’s oldest alternative journals. Fiercely independent and proudly subversive, the modern-day This acts as a critical, gutsy voice in today’s media landscape, dedicated to exposing under-the-radar stories and to publishing smart, progressive commentary and reporting on Canadian politics, pop culture, social issues, and the arts. Throughout the decades, This Magazine has stuck to its radical roots—never wavering in our editorial commitment to fearless, rabble-rousing journalism. As Sarah Polley once said, “This never ceases to make me think, question things and get angry.”

Praised for integrating analysis and investigative reporting with in-depth arts coverage, This Magazine has been instrumental in highlighting the new works of young, talented Canadian writers and artists. Our writers often insightful, thought-provoking and engaging coverage on diverse issues, inspiring discourse and igniting debate on everything from feminism and LGBTQ rights to mental health, racism, and more. We’re thrilled to have introduced the early work of Canada’s most notable writers, critics and artists, including Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Naomi Klein, Sheila Heti, Rick Salutin, Drew Hayden Taylor, Dionne Brand, Tomson Highway, Lynn Crosbie, Andre Alexis, Lillian Allen, Linda McQuaig, Mark Kingwell, Dani Couture, Grace O’Connell, Alexandra Molotkow, Rosemary Sullivan, Evelyn Lau, Dennis Lee, Al Purdy, Andrew Potter, Doug Saunders and Clive Thompson.

In 2008, This Magazine was named one of the 20 most influential Canadian magazines of all time by Masthead Magazine, Canada’s magazine authority, and a panel of industry experts. In 2012 This Magazine was named Small Magazine of the Year by the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors (CSME)—for the third year in a row. In 2010, 2011, and 2012 This Magazine was the winner in the small magazine category at the Canadian Newsstand Awards—an award the magazine has previously won five times. In 2011, the magazine also received an honorable mention at the Utne Independent Press Awards in the social/cultural criticism category.

This Magazine has been nominated for more than 80 National Magazine Awards. In 2014, This Magazine contributor Catherine McIntyre won Best New Writer at the National Magazine Awards for “Clusterf*ck,” a piece that appeared in the magazine. In 2016, we celebrated our 50th anniversary and five decades as a vital voice on the Canadian publishing scene.

This Magazine is published six times a year by the Red Maple Foundation, a registered charity (charitable registration number 11911 3140 RR0001).
