This Magazine was founded in 1966 as This Magazine is About Schools. As our original name suggests, the early This focused on radical education reform and activism. To honour our education roots, we’re highlighting our favourite education stories just in time for back-to-school season. It’s full of special education features, and you can even download our first-ever Alternative University Guide—full of information that matters to the socially conscious student.
Also keep an eye out for brand new stories on progressive post-secondary initiatives—from students, faculty, and even administration—and be sure to share campus activist stories from your own schools. We want to highlight which schools have the best LGBTQ rights, the best mental health programs, and the most accessible transit. We care about what really matters to you: environmental practices, support for students who are parents, sexual health, disabilities support—and more. Let’s tale about what schools are fighting rape culture in innovative new ways and what schools have some of the most active student advocacy clubs.
Does that sound like a school group you know or are involved in? An activist you admire? Let us know and we’ll feature them in our ever-growing Alternative University Guide. Be sure to check back often for new content!
