It's not just because it would have fewer side effects on the women they care about, but because it would give them more power and more effective birth control than condoms over their own "reproductive rights". Taking the pill themselves would ensure more choice in whether they produce a child or not. (While women can choose to terminate a pregnancy, men cannot.) When states like California say that even a minor male who is statutorily raped must pay child support if a pregancy results, I can see even some parents wanting their sons to "be on the pill" for their own protection.
