I've never called myself an Indian but I'm Indian by experience and imposition. I grew up across the river from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation ( OCN ) once called The Pas Reserve and I attended the Catholic school run by the same priesthood who ran residential schools. My forefathers were fur trade leaders, French speaking but immersed in Indian ways and means while many they married Indian women from their first arrival from France. The proud pure French separated themselves from mixed bloods among them by calling them "Les Metis." These men (Metis) held to French language and culture for generations but it evolved as they moved inland and traded with Indians. They did become a separated ideal. Metis are a proud and caring people and strong people today. I'm one of them. I'm Indian too. History is my witness.
