Surprise, surprise. Ian Capstick, former "right-hand man" to Sheila Copps, recommends that the NDP change its name to the centre-right party of the US and drop its affiliation to organized labour.

Ian, why not just return to the Liberal party?

Dropping New and changing the name to the Democrat Party is a feeble attempt to ride the popularity of the centre-right American Democrat Obama. Do we really need to emulate a right wing American Party?

If we are going to change the name, how about the 'Social Democrat Party'? This reflects the presumably leftist politics without changing the name to confuse voters with NPD alignment with American Democrats (who are closer to the Liberals in policy/ideology than the NDP)

Now that's what I want in a second Liberal party! Giving in and thinking inside the box! No surprises here— this conversation is always tied to ditching labour, "because labour doesn't seem to be voting for us." For some reason, that's always presented as the end of the story— I guess it's too much to delve into *why* labour doesn't vote for the NDP even though it's in their interests to do so.

The "new" in "New Democratic Party" has always meant "new thinking" to me— not a party past its expiration date. I've never understood why we don't just spin it that way, unless through ditching "new" we're intentionally admitting that we no longer have "new"-type ideas. Which would be the case, if we're actually pursuing the winning move of hitching Team Orange's brand to the centre-right Barack Obama administration. I think we might want to consider that that's exactly how "Democratic Party" will be received.

Just like the Conservatives dropped the Progressive part of their name... since they are no longer progressive.
